Chasing the Sun

Categories:

gallery km is pleased to present our first solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Jill Daves, Chasing the Sun. The exhibition consists of two parts, one in each of the gallery's two exhibition rooms. In the east gallery, we will present "Chasing the Sun", a site specific series in which Daves uses repetitive mark making on the gallery walls, spending multiple days in the space tracing the shadows created by the sun's movement, and in so doing leaves behind a two dimensional, transient representation of the passage of time within the gallery space. In the west gallery, Daves will present several "Wood Grain Paintings" formed with abstracted tracings of oil paint on visibly-grained wood panel. Here, Daves references the visible compromise between the wood grain naturally produced from a tree's growth and the reformation of that pattern through the man-made commercial process of sheeting and veneer, while also invoking the historical weight of traditional oil painting.
