349 Revolutionary Art
Havana, Cuba
The Museum of the Revolution on the occasion of the XIII Biennial of Havana, presents “349 Revolutionary Art,” an exhibition exploring 60 years of Cuban art and reuniting 349 important artworks including paintings, sculpture, photography, video, installation and performance from Cuban artists who lived, or still live, in this period of censorship and governmental manipulation. Marking the iconic moments of “revolutionary” history, the exhibition presents the public with key works in Cuban art history and explores the ways in which this history has shaped artistic production and national identity.
“349 Revolutionary Art” comprises three floors and 30,000 square feet of the building which houses the museum, making this the most comprehensive and significant exhibition of modern and contemporary Cuban art to date. Similarly, panel discussions, symposiums, talks in different lecture halls, and other public events will be included in order to encourage viewers to explore, deepen, and interact directly with the History of Revolutionary Art in Cuba.
This project takes as its point of departure the origin of constitutional censorship with “Words to Intellectuals,” and brings it to the present with Decree 349 of the Constitution, also commending the founding work for the Museum of Dissidence. “349 Revolutionary Art” focuses on the political narrative told by those Cuban artists who established their careers after 1959 to the contemporary; within or outside the island. Through a selection of fundamental works, created in each of the “revolutionary” decades, the exhibition explores Cuban artistic production enlightening both revolutionary and non-revolutionary artists, thus contradicting the verdict “Within the Revolution, everything; Against the Revolution, nothing,” and defying the culture’s supposed authoritarian judge and executioner.
Opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019, from 6:00-10:00 PM
