From The Battlefield is a program with artists, curators and writers from Ukraine and the Netherlands, about living life through a war situation. It aims to amplify the direct testimony and evidence of those who are committed to protecting freedom and hope.  The collaborative project features an exhibition, presented at SEA Foundation from 13 to 23 July. Additionally, there is a public program at LocHal on 13, 14 July from 19:30, and on 21 July at De Pont Museum starting at 18:00. Feature film ‘Homeward’ will be screened at Cinecitta on 22 July at 19:00.

The war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine in 2014 escalated to a horrific level on 24 February 2022. The destruction of war and the war crimes committed by Russia have brought hundreds of thousands of deaths, ruined cities, and caused the emigration of millions of people.

To better understand the current situation in Ukraine we offer the practice of direct dialogue. Through a public programme we inform how individuals and communities live through inhumane conditions and in addition we offer knowledge about Ukrainian culture and histories.

From The Battlefield focuses on the power of making small decisions, in war and sacrifices that must be made for freedom and dignity. It helps to cultivate small and fragile experiences in a positive way. They are meaningful on a personal level and contribute to solidarity and attention on a global scale. When the governmental war machine receives material support or acts of activism trying to influence the politicians, these seemingly small-scale experiences grow into volunteering, crowdfunding and self-organized initiatives. They represent a daily form of resistance.

The ideas of the brightest theorists do not seem humane enough to frame a productive dialogue between the Western world and the frontier of the current war. And so, From The Battlefield will not address any theory. Through collaborations and artistic production by Ukrainian and Dutch participants we want to capture a specific time and space where violence and disruption prevails. How do people live through a war whose will for freedom is powerful And how to best offer them a safe space so that hope can sprout again?
