The solo show ”Perpetuum Violence” by Catalin Badarau relates to a better understanding of certain kinds of perpetual violence. Inspired both by particular situations and personal experiences of the artist himself, ”Perpetuum Violence” conceives a larger, general view to this topic.

Violence is part of the human nature. In the history of civilization violence is in perpetuum within people’s existence for centuries. The basic laws of survival in nature are based on permanent crime. In a Darwinistic understanding, the struggles for surviving and perpetuating the species directly depend on transmitting the winner’s genes. On the other hand, violence and crime are significant factors for spawning pity, compassion and also human rights.

The creations of Catalin Badarau are enthused by social topics on contemporary forms of violence as forced labour, new types of migrations and by human feelings of sufferance or alienation.

For many of his artworks, Badarau appoints a human model, a person with physical and psychical disabilities, fact which can also be a key for a better understanding of his art.

As sculptor, Catalin Badarau works in connection to the human body. Carved or moulded in polyurethane or synthetic resins, the parts of the represented human bodies are hung, sunk or laid down on different metal structures. The thick and heavy metal structures create, at all times, a huge impact in relation with the softness of the represented human flesh.

Being self-sustainable, Badarau’s artworks are parts of carefully crafted installations, directly interacting with their environment. Their sculptural approaches deal with the expression of human flesh and body being under pressure, being suspended or submerged into liquids. Their titles invoke situations or feelings of humankind being under siege by the very humans who form it.
