In May 2022 the Gallery was generously gifted Land Quest by artist John Hitchens which featured in his significant 2020 retrospective Aspects of Landscape. In addition to this he also donated a pastel landscape drawing by his Grandfather, Alfred, making Southampton the first public collection to hold works by three generations of the Hitchens family.
In celebration of this generous gift, we will be displaying these two new acquisitions together for the first time, alongside works already in the collection by John’s father Ivon Hitchens. The exhibition will also include work by John’s son, Simon, bringing the family’s interpretation of landscape into a fourth generation.
Alfred Hitchens (1861-1942) was an English painter who exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. He is father, grandfather and great grandfather of artists Ivon Hitchens, John Hitchens and Simon Hitchens respectively. Ivon Hitchens (1893 – 1979) was an English painter who was part of the 'London Group' of artists and exhibited with them during the 1930s. His work was exhibited in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1956. John Hitchens (born 1940) is an English artist who gained early recognition for his landscape paintings at the Marjorie Parr Gallery London. A major retrostective of his work was held at the Southampton City Art gallery in 2020. Simon Hitchens (born 1967) is a sculptor producing abstract forms from stone and other media. He is a member of the Royal West of England Academy and a fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors.
