Date:
Tuesday, 11 July 2017 to Thursday, 13 July 2017

Arnolfini is delighted to host the latest line-up of emerging new performance talent from Ferment, Bristol Old Vic's artist development programme.

A message from Emma Bettridge, Bristol Old Vic Ferment Producer:

'Welcome to another fine crop of South West artists, the ones who are blazing trails, enriching our lives and generally being awesome and inspiring.

This July we're taking Ferment out across the city to our friends at Arnolfini to try out the first haul of new ideas, before returning back to Bristol Old Vic for a further three nights of brand new work.

As always, this is your chance to get stuck in and feedback to each artist so that, together, we can ensure a future life for this work.

Do go and check this lot out, they are really very good.

You should probably go and see all of them.

In case you miss out.

You know? Wouldn't that be awful?

Enjoy!'

All performances are £5 (plus booking fee), bookable through Bristol Old Vic via the links below.

Age guidance for all performances is 12+ unless stated otherwise.

Plow, Sharon Clark
Tue 11 July | 6.30pm

Estelle is silently walking. She has been on the road for weeks. She has crossed three states yet no-one knows where she has come from and no-one knows where she is going. People along her route beg to touch her, feed her, follow her - she cannot escape them nor the hurricane of press speculation, social media chatter and government suspicion that daily grows. And then there is the man who has decided she simply cannot be allowed to succeed....

Plow is a new script by Sharon Clark whose past plays include The Biting PointPavementOver The Hill There's Something Better and The Stick House.

Robinson: The Other Island, Give It A Name

Tue 11 July | 8.15pm

A man, shipwrecked on the far side of the planet, desperately tries to retain his culture, adrift in an environment he doesn't understand.

A reader, alone in a flat, surrounded by what he salvaged from the wreckage, the separation, the debts, he tries to make sense of it all. His ship has sailed.

Part theatre, part audio drama, part ASMR experience. Robinson will explore the island, the isolation, two remarkable novels, and the act of reading.

Performance involves headphones and strong language. Mostly in English.

All equipment will be provided.

Someone Should Start Laughing, Unchartered Collective
Wed 12 July | 5.30pm and 8pm

10 of you, 10 of us & 30 minutes to tell our stories (and make you laugh).

Someone Should Start Laughing is about lives lived with invisible disability and chronic pain. And how we talk about that without turning you off, or turning away. Through sound, touch, silence, laughter and dance, these immersive stories are handled with the necessary wit, tenderness and healthy respect for life's curveballs.

The company gallop through their stories from diagnosis, to brave new self (on a good day). And through our common humanity we bridge the distance between one life and another. Someone Should Start Laughing is a scratch performance from directors Raquel Meseguer (Lost Dog Associate Artist) and Owen Calvert Lyons.

Polish Vermin, Agnieszka Blonska
Thu 13 July | 6.30pm

What is our position in the face of abuse and division? Can we change anything? Can I? Neutrality is not an answer and confusion seems overwhelming. Do I still belong here?

Polish Vermin explores our attitudes to the Brexit vote and what comes next for us all. It's being developed in Cornwall, a county that voted leave and Bristol, a city that voted remain.

Palmyra, Bertrand Lesca & Nasi Voutsas
Thu 13 July | 8.15pm

This show has been really difficult to make. I don't want to make a big deal or anything... But he's been really difficult.

Following the success of EUROHOUSE, Bert & Nasi return with Palmyra, an exploration of revenge, the politics of destruction and what we consider to be barbarian.

An essential piece of political drama mixing fact and fiction, Palmyra invites people to step back from the news, looking at what lies beneath-and beyond-civilization.
