On April 28, 2018 Joseph Gross Gallery will present the first major solo show in L.A. of the artist David “Mr. StarCity” White. Give Me Some Head, taking nearly two years to complete, offers viewers the opportunity to experience the intimate journey of White’s creative process expressed in the form of self-portraits, sculpture, poetry, books and even cut-and-sew garments (in a special collaboration with bespoke brand Print All Over Me).

Give Me Some Head exhibits White’s ability to create stunningly imaginative work that exudes a colorful and vibrant positivity. His abstract self-portraits and corresponding poems are capsules of his vulnerability, each representing a chapter of an ongoing love story between himself and his art – wavering from feelings of joy to fear, to doubt and confusion, and ultimately the overwhelming ecstasy of falling in love all over again. It is with daring scale, light-heartedness and courage that this undeniably charismatic and transparently optimistic artist addresses such intimate and personal narratives.

Artist ( Description ):

Growing up in Brooklyn, the influence of David White’s (a.k.a. Mr. Star City) home of New York City is infused throughout his playful street art, repurposed-object installations, paintings, and sculptures. The works of David White emerge from his spontaneous and physically involved process. Using any materials available at hand while responding and creating through visual sensation and intuition, his works are full of splatters, stains, loose paint chips, duct tape, dust and even hairs on occasion. His refined use of charged colors, textured surfaces, and eclectic patterns inspire a vibrant, joyful sensation. The fine balance of geometric shapes with quick, loose brushwork and commanding pictorial form that lies between abstraction and figuration express his commitment to constant experimentation and evolvement.
