Heretofore by Won Sil Kim

For Korean-born artist, Won Sil Kim, whose work will be on display in SoLA’s adjacent back gallery, inspiration for her latest work of collage art pieces are derived from both nature and contemporary culture.

“My work is largely informed by my rural, Los Angeles mountainside environment, focused on nature where I live or where I had been,” says Kim. “The layers in my work enhance the sense of mystic quality and joy of imagination.”

Using an array of photo images, Kim layers them to create new images altogether, showing a process of change. By using clear acrylic board instead of canvas, and embellishing the finished product with acrylic pigment, she demonstrates how new and interesting scenes can emerge.

“Won Sil is innovative in her use of materials,” says Peggy Sivert, SoLA’s executive director and the shows’ curator. “Her sculpture training in Seoul influences her unusual choice of media and dimensional layering.”
