Juried by Holly Tempo (see bio below)

SoLA Gallery is honored to partner with the Southern California Women’s Caucus for Art (SCWCA) to host Pulse of LA 2019, the second annual juried exhibit showcasing the work of Los Angeles women artists. Concurrently, exhibiting in gallery 2, SoLA Gallery will host a solo show featuring artist recent works by Kate Carvellas.

Pulse of LA was conceived by the SCWCA and designed to bring more opportunities for women artists to exhibit their artwork. The exhibition, juried by social practice artist Holly Tempo, aims to represent women artists who are truly in touch with the rhythms and diversity of the city of Los Angeles. Their artwork makes visible the very fluid and complex identity of Southern California. As a supporter of women in the arts, SCWCA selected SoLA Gallery to host Pulse of LA because it is not only run by a woman, but also because it is located in an up and coming location for arts in the Crenshaw district of South Los Angeles. “Peggy [SoLA Gallery director] is the first to bring awareness to this location and we want to give our members and women artists of LA the opportunity to be in the forefront of an art movement,” says Shelley Heffler, president of SCWCA.

Excerpt from the Juror Statement

“I was impressed with the breadth and quality of artwork submitted by artists—both SCWCA members and artists-at-large. I found that there were several possible shows that could have been culled from the work. I settled on creating an exhibition the tone of which seems to be in keeping with our fraught times, and one that focuses on scapes: of the land and city, and of psychology and culture. The show has been laid out so as to allow the viewer to experience these scapes and their varying nuances as she/he moves through the space. This exhibition seeks to reveal and validate the experiences of Los Angeles area women artists who live in challenging times and struggle to navigate a terrain that is both dangerous and seductive.”
