MAYUKA YAMAMOTO

“Trick or Treat”

October 08 –29

GR gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition by Mayuka Yamamoto, whose dreamy and melancholic paintings depict alluring yet eerie fanciful portraits. Embracing in full the definition of Japanese “Kawaii” aesthetic, Yamamoto’s compositions always develop around the figure of a cute child dressed up in different animal costumes, or even fused with animal features. Her spotless oil technique execution is dominated by light tone pastel colors that, together with the character barren gaze, imbue the artwork in a timeless wistful atmosphere. A strong sense of nostalgia, connected to artist’s urge to evoke her beloved childhood, counterbalances the adorable semblance of the protagonist and his accessories.

“Trick or Treat” will unveil fifteen various size paintings on canvas and a lithograph, appositely  created for this occasion.

Opening reception: Saturday October 08, 5:00pm - 8:00pm (Exhibition Dates: October 08 – October 29, 2022). Members of the press can contact GR gallery in advance to schedule a private viewing and/or an interview with the artist before the exhibition is officially open. Visitors who want to attend the opening can RSVP by contacting the gallery.

Yamamoto’s work speaks to a sense of childhood innocence and youthful rebellion, there is preciousness and rough. The animal attributes are like elements of fantasy and escape, an exploration of imagination that we have as kids, but often begin to lose the sense of wonderment when we grow older. The subjects looks lonely and out of place, being documented as if they wanted to hide in their fantastical worlds without being noticed. The artist’s aesthetic is highly poetic and introspective and her visual approach uncommonly captivating and unspoiled, capable to immerge the attentive viewer in the dreamlike forgotten realm of their memories and engage in a conversation with their inner child. Mayuka’s art is also very intimate and biographical, since she started this specific creative journey over 20 years when she was pregnant and started reflecting on her past; according her own words: “When I asked myself why I continue to draw these pictures, even though I am no longer a child, I realized I feel nostalgia for my childhood. It seems that my way of preserving this feeling is to paint these pictures continually. I have a certain memory of when I was young; my parents always worked very hard, but Christmas was our family time together at home. It was a special day. Even now, when I smell the candles on a Christmas cake, my heart returns to my childhood as clear as if it were yesterday. It's the same feeling as when I finished drawing these pictures. When I look at my work, I feel a little sadness and longing, but also happy.”

Born in 1964 in Okayama, Japan, now works in between Tokyo and Gunma, Yamamoto is widely recognized as one of Japan’s leading second-generation contemporary artist. She received her master's degree at Tokyo's Musashino Art University in 1990 and joined the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artist to continue her studies in London until 1999. Her works have been shown in several solo and group shows and found place in prestigious private and public collections all around the world.
