Equity Gallery is pleased to present Regime, a solo exhibition by Catherine Tafur. The exhibition will be on view from August 9 through September 2, 2017, with a public opening reception on Wednesday, August 9, 6-8pm.

Tafur presents paintings and ink drawings that explore American identity and the socio-political climates it constructs. Tafur’s work uses representational symbolism to unearth the oppressive roots of America’s founding, illuminating how institutions such as white supremacy and misogyny are not just present here today, but are intrinsically American.

From mass incarceration to immigration policy, Tafur tackles the American brand of oppression that birthed our current regime. These works bear witness to some of the manifestations of this inherent violence in our society and the cruelty of our leadership. Tafur’s art demands that we consider the true face of America and our own participation in and against this system.

Artist ( Description ):

Catherine Tafur (b. 1976 in Lima, Peru, lives and works in New York City) spent her early childhood in Peru before relocating to Wilmington, Delaware. She then moved to New York to study at the Cooper Union School of Art where she earned her BFA in 1998. Tafur has since shown her work nationally and internationally and is included in various established private collections. Her work explores themes such as death, vulnerability, loss of innocence, rebirth and redemption and are informed by the experience of her youth as a queer, multiracial immigrant in American suburbia. The subjects of her work are political and personal, feminist and confrontational.
