Exhibition Dates: November 7th – 28th

Science, Technology & the Future of Art, a new exhibition opening this Friday at the Pacific Art League, includes works from a wide array of both traditional and cutting edge mediums.  Over 50 pieces, juried by guest curator Gail Wight, Associate Professor of Art at Stanford University specializing in experimental media and the intersection of art and science, showcase works done in new and digital media, installation, video, photography, painting and drawing, and sculpture. Specifically created for this show is an interactive installation by Silicon Valley based Artist Scotty Gorham. Pulse, a 6’x9’ version of a similar piece Gorham exhibited at ZERO1 Garage in San Jose, the sculptural light-array flashes rhythmically to the beat of a viewer’s pulse: “Pulse is an interactive light installation that utilizes the aesthetic formalism present in everyday systems to investigate the historical confluence of modernist architecture, the digital revolution, and the "evolution" of soul to disco.  It also serves to externalize and mechanize one of the most basic internal human processes - the pulse.” Another piece by Gorham, viewable through PAL’s windows, “Pink Clouds”, uses a series of QR codes viewers can scan with their smart phones to watch a series of videos.  Also worth seeing are three pieces by San Francisco-based artist Alexis Arnold, who crystalizes old discarded books: “The Crystallized Book Series addresses the materiality of the book versus the text or content of the book, in addition to commenting on the vulnerability of the printed book. The series was prompted by repeatedly finding boxes of discarded books, by the onset of e-books, and by the shuttering of bookstores.”  PAL hopes the exhibition stimulates questions about the way art and technology intersect, both historically and what that means for the future.

Also on display in the Corridor Gallery is Playful Vision, a solo show by mixed media artist Rosine Ferber. “My life is a complex multicultural quilt, and everything I create begins with small bits and pieces of fabric, yarn, paper, and other found objects, that eventually come together to form a cohesive and integrated whole.”
