Dominican-born artist Hamlet Mateo’s talent was recognized by gallerists, collectors, and his contemporaries across the Bay Area during his 20+ years as a resident. His work exquisitely circumnavigated themes of mental health, race, immigration, and queer identity. Hamlet's prolific multidisciplinary practice included drawing, poetry, film, performance, installation, and postal correspondence art. With his family’s blessing, a committee of artists and friends has assembled to collect and archive Hamlet's monumental body of work. Curators Jill Plamann and Beth Tisthammer have organized a limited selection of pen and ink drawings to be exhibited at Digital Grange’s IceHouse Gallery in Petaluma during the month of August. Rare footage of Hamlet’s performance work and solo installations will also be on view.
