A River Runs Through features a group of artists forged by respective ties to Kansas City. The exhibition stands in reference to the geographic feature that distinguishes the city and its changes. This changing body of water reflects the Kansas City community. A River Runs Through captures a view of the many forces that pull and push the local art scene. Through photography, collage, painting and drawing, the show explores the forces both internal and external, abstract and physical, that change the nature of the Kansas City ecosystem.

Like Kansas City, small towns and large cities across the country morph to meet shifting concepts of what a community is. In the process, the people who belong to these areas also shift in and out of place. With them they carry personal markers, both material and immaterial, of where they have lived, with whom, and how. In this transient state, how does a community define itself and continue to operate with a culture?

The show looks to reconcile some of these trends by bringing together individuals who have made a mark in the KC ecosystem, acknowledging their presence outside of the city, and therefore supporting continued connections with those inside Kansas City. Featuring work by Madeline Brice, Daniel Chase, Elise Gagliardi, Samantha Haan, Cesar Lopez, Lily Mueller, Andrew Ordonez, Megan Pobywajlo, Caleb Taylor and Max Wagner.

Artist ( Description ):

Madeline Brice
Madeline Brice is a Kansas City, Missouri based multidisciplinary queer visual artist and curator. In parallel with visual arts, Brice works as an active community member and organizer as the Director and Associate Curator of Weinberger Fine Art, a commercial gallery in Kansas City, and as Co-Curator of Curiouser + Curiouser, and artist run space in Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from Missouri State University with both a BFA in Painting and a BA in Art History. She is both a published and exhibiting artist having shown nationally in both solo and juried group exhibitions, most recently participating in the MDW Fair at Mana Contemporary in Chicago. In 2021, she was featured in Sotheby's Institutes' Made in Bed magazine as an emerging artist to know. And in 2020, she was a recipient of a Charlotte Street Foundation Rocket Grant. Her work continues to be added to many private collections, and is a part of the permanent collection at Hotel Vandivort in Springfield, Missouri.

Daniel Chase
Daniel Chase is a multi-disciplinary artist who collages the processes of paper-making, photography, drawing, and sculpture to create fossil-like records of experience. He creates layered catalogs of erratic experience by building, erasing, and note-taking. Through recycling and reusing lumber, paper, and other materials, these eclectic sculptures seek a disjointed unity and present the complicated history of their components.

Elise Gagliardi
Elise Gagliardi is a mixed media artist who lives and works in Kansas City, MO. She received her BFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2006. Her work has been shown nationally, displayed in various publications, and held in private collections. She is also gallerist, curator and mother of three young children.

In her work, she embraces her family's practice of storytelling. Drawing from nostalgic memories, photographs, and fantastical stories she builds whimsical, ephemeral memorials. These memorials are often centered around relationships and times once had. In each piece she makes obscure, and personal references to individuals, motherhood, legacy, permanence, and impermanence. For her, creating art is an act of accounting, remembering, and holding space for those fleeting moments. Her art practice is an act of “planting seeds” for rebirth. She has found this concept best described through the words of author Joseph Campbell in what he describes as “The Myth of the Eternal Return.” She works in a variety of mediums including installation, photography, painting, and mixed media collage. She uses literal and symbolic imagery that varies in each work. She's interested in creating deeply introspective spaces that are also interactive for the viewers.

Samantha Haan
Samantha Han (b.1997) is an artist and curator based in Kansas City, Missouri. She received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2019. She is currently a resident of Holsum Studios where we makes Paintings, drawings, and textiles. She makes system based works that investigate the building blocks of language. In 2022 she showed her work with the Ekru project and Beco Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri and has shown at The Front in New Orlean, Louisiana. She is also the co-curator at Curiouser KC.She is also the President of the board at Plug Gallery with five other artists.

Cesar Lopez
Informed by the journey as an immigrant to America, Cesar Lopez looks to flags, maps and globes to articulate his complex relationship to geography. Lopez received his BFA from Painting at the Kansas City Art Institute. His recent exhibitions include Gallery Bogart, Crossroads Hotel and Plug Gallery.

Cesar was born 1991 in Coatepeque, Guatemala, and currently lives and works in Kansas City, MO.

Lily Mueller
Lily Mueller is a Fiber artist based in Kansas City, Missouri. Mueller explores the processes of quilting and drawing while integrating them with concepts of psychedelia, color, architecture and mid century modern design. Much of her inspiration comes from performing and listening to music alongside memories of her childhood and Nicaraguan heritage. She has been largely influenced by her father’s career as an architect, his interest in 60’s psychedelic light shows, and her mother’s love for textiles and fashion. Mueller received her BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute in 2020 and now continues to exhibit her work in Kansas City and across the country.

Color is the language of her work. She makes quilts and paintings inspired by music, psychedelia and architecture. She is heavily influenced by art nouveau band posters from the late 1960’s, mid century modern design patterns and the geometry of buildings. She utilizes these design concepts to create work that feels balanced yet makes a bold and colorful statement.

Andrew Ordonez
Andrew Ordonez (b.1991 Fort Worth, TX) is a visual artist living and working in New Haven, CT. He received a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2013. His studio practice currently explores the tension of cultural erasure and conservation using aggregate stone materials such as sand, gravel, cement, chalk, and paper. Ordonez was a visual artist resident at the Charlotte Street Foundation from 2019 to 2022 and recently participated in the Casa Lu artist residency in Mexico City. His visual and curatorial practice has been featured across the Midwest, United States and North America. His work has been recently shown at the Leedy-Voulkos Contemporary Art Center, H&R BlockArtspace, Kiosk Gallery, Charlotte Street Foundation, and the Mexic-Arte Museum. Ordonez is currently an MFA candidate at Yale School of Art in New Haven, CT.

Recently he has been constructing abstract relief sculptures that explore tension found within geological erasure and conservation. This process focuses on experimental casting methods, embedding various combinations of cements, dirt, rubber, plaster, cleaning agents, glycerin and capital debris within deconstructed travel luggage. He is interested in researching material relationships and artifact transformations relating to conglomerate matter and queer centric time-capsules. He has also been exploring time-based mediums such as video projections, screens and audio to further infuse sensory relationships into installations.

Megan Pobywajlo & Max Wagner
Megan Pobywajlo and Max Wagner (Megan + Max) make large-scale still life photographs that combine the languages and techniques of commercial photography with mindful play. To make their photographs, Megan + Max source locally available materials, food, and second-hand, seemingly disparate objects. These things can be natural and transient, plastic and permanent, common or rare, but often, they are objects that are elegant in their imperfection. Like placing stones in a zen garden, Megan + Max take turns choosing objects, colors, shapes, light, and shadow in their photographs. In responding to each other’s ‘marks’ Megan + Max level hierarchies and build a shared vision.

Megan is a MFA candidate at the University of Arkansas and a recent adjunct faculty member in the Photography department at the Kansas City Art Institute. In 2019 she received the Charlotte Street Foundation’s Visual Artist Award and exhibited her work in the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.

Max is an artist, educator and commercial photographer based in Kansas City. In 2021 he was appointed Lecturer in Photography at the University of Kansas. Max specializes in the documentation of artworks and major collections for artists, galleries and institutions across the midwest.

Caleb Taylor
Through painting, installation, sculpture, collage and photography, Caleb Taylor seeks to understand and intervene in constructed environments, the history of place, perceptual dynamics and site. These ‘sites’ include found books and images, architectural interiors, building facades, and gallery venues. In the conSTRUCT and reSTRUCTURES Series Taylor photographs grayscale paper forms against faux architectural surfaces, then cuts and layers them according to observed rhythms in urban topographies. The resulting shifts in light, architectonic form, and shadow create new fractured geometries that inform installations mediating site-specificity, abstraction, representation, fact, and fiction.

Caleb Taylor is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant, the Charlotte Street Foundation Fellowship, and residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Joan Mitchell Center, and Ucross Foundation. His paintings and drawings are published in Art in America and New American Painting, and he has exhibited at venues including the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Grand Arts (KC), Weatherspoon Art Museum (NC), and Tiger Strikes Asteroid (NY). Taylor’s work is included in the public collections of the Nerman MoCA, KU Medical Center, and Polsinelli Law Firm (KC). He received a MFA with an emphasis in Painting from Montana State University-Bozeman and a BFA from Northwest Missouri State University, double-majoring in Painting and Ceramics. He is a Professor at Metropolitan Community College – Longview.

Taylor is a founding member of PLUG Projects, a curatorial collaboration in Kansas City formed in 2011 with the shared goal of expanding the connections of Kansas City voices as part of a wider, national network of creative practitioners. During this tenure with PLUG, contributed to the curation of over 40 exhibitions and more than 100 public programs ranging from rap battles, interpretive sound performances, installations taking over vacated shopping malls, artist book fairs, and collaborative events joining confectionery and dance. PLUG is a recipient of a 2011 Rocket Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation, Spencer Museum of Art, and Charlotte Street Foundation and two Francis Family Foundation Grants.
