Building Bridges Art Foundation presents Labyrinths of Wayward Love A Photography Exhibition by Andrew Dunbar

July 19th through August 20th

Opening Saturday July 19th, 7.00pm

 AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHER

ANDREW DUNBAR IS

STAGING HIS LATEST

EXHIBITION, LABYRINTHS OF

WAYWARD LOVE, THIS JULY

AT BERGAMOT STATION IN

SANTA MONICA.

Labyrinths of Wayward Love is a glimpse of

the artist’s creative life, containing works

from a range of Dunbar’s most celebrated

series, including Chiaroscuro, Body Piercing

and La Habana Cuba. The photographs

intrigue and fascinate, drawing us into

Dunbar’s world of light, shade, and illusion.

After finding his passion in photography

whilst living in California in the 1980s,

Dunbar returned to Australia to continue

his studies. He has since built a career in

both commercial and artistic photography,

producing one of the most confronting and

captivating bodies of work to come out of

Australia. LABYRINTHS OF WAYWARD

LOVE IS A SHOWCASE

OF DUNBAR’S MOST

RECOGNIZABLE WORKS,

INCLUDING IMAGES SUCH

AS ‘HONEY, I’M HOME!’,

‘PENNY’, AND ‘WELCOME’.

The varied themes of the pieces reflect the

title, creating a labyrinth within the exhibit

itself. The myriad of ideas display Dunbar’s

stated intent to use his ‘camera as a means’

to express his interests, both social and

political.

His monochromatic style and intriguing

ideas are timeless, and his images remain

as captivating as they were at their release.

Through works such as ‘Cigarman’, the

exhibition enables the viewer to see the

world through Dunbar’s eyes, provoking

thought on subjects that he has constantly

revisited within his work and holds close to

his heart.

One of the consistent themes of

Dunbar’s work has been his championing of

the powerless, evidenced in his work with

Aboriginal people in Australia (the Nakkondi/

Look collection), his involvement with the

Cuban photographers of the Revolution

(CUBA – La Revolucion y La Habana

Contemporanea) and his project to raise both

money and awareness of the

LABYRINTHS OF WAYWARD

LOVE OFFERS A RARE

CHANCE TO SEE A SPECIAL

SELECTION OF DUNBAR’S

WORK, WHICH HAS BEEN

DRAWN TOGETHER FROM

AROUND THE WORLD

ESPECIALLY FOR THIS

EXHIBITION. IT OFFERS

A REWARDING AND AT

TIMES CHALLENGING

INSIGHT INTO THE

INDIVIDUAL VISION OF A

UNIQUE ARTIST.

Dunbar has had over eighty exhibitions

worldwide, and his work resides in

many collections including The National

Museum of Australia’s Permanent

Collection. Since 1996 he has been

the recipient of over sixty awards and

commendations including The Australian

Editorial Photographer of the Year and the

prestigious Ilford Trophy. In the United

States his work been exhibited alongside

such luminaries as Annie Leibovitz,

Man Ray, Irving Penn, Greg Gorman,

Edward S. Curtis, Diane Arbus, and

Paul Outerbridge, Jr.
