Hashimoto Contemporary SF is pleased to present OCULUS, a solo exhibition by multi-disciplinary artist Lucien Shapiro. Returning for his second solo exhibition with the gallery, this latest body of work continues the artist’s exploration of transformation through laborious craft and meditative consumption of time to create ornate, ritualistic objects.

Humble materials such as bottle caps, broken automotive glass and discarded plastic are transmuted into totemic figures and portals through the artist’s intricate practice. The sculptural objects created for OCULUS mix natural and cityscape materials obsessively collected from Shapiro’s travels ranging from Indonesian jungles to San Francisco streets. Organic crystals and wood forms interweave with “street diamonds” (broken auto glass), spikes and metal remnants to create armored vessels and abstract figures.

Shapiro’s work is imbued with a reliquary spirit, at once ancient and modern. Each piece is a fertile object oscillating between artifice and the natural, performing without the human gaze, unconstrained or concerned.

Please join us for OCULUS, opening August 3rd with an evening reception from 6pm - 9pm, the artist will be performing Become One with Ness at our sister gallery Spoke Art throughout the evening. The exhibition will be on view through August 24th. For more information, additional images, or exclusive content, please email us at sf@hashimotocontemporary.com
