Peeling back the Layers, an international online solo painting exhibition by Pia Dugger, opens on May 01, 2023, and will continue through May 31, 2023.
Pia Dugger work explores the subject of mental health and life-work balance, peeling back the layers, going more than just skin-deep. Her paintings illustrate various bones and skulls, as if on display inside a natural history museum for everyone to see. The muted shades of the specimen contrast with brightly colored backgrounds, reflective of digitalization and technology, and symbolic of outside influences and disturbances. The authentic versus the artificial inspired by osteology and biology as she is often on the hunt for reference materials to better understand the specimens she paints. She believes that by looking more closely at bones, she simultaneously learn more about herelf and the world that surrounds us. Bones and skeletons are often depicted as signs of death; however, for her, they are the essence of life, enabling our bodies to function and move forward. In Pia's opinion, sometimes, we just need to take a closer look inside.

I am convinced that there is a direct link between our well-being and nature.
Outdoor-walks and beach visits are perceived to be therapeutic and healing. Especially here in south Florida there are many opportunities to connect with nature.
Nevertheless, we get sucked in to the daily grind and are paralyzed by electronic overstimulation. In addition, we destroy the very thing that heals us by over consumption, pollution and the need for immediate gratification.
I draw inspiration from my personal experiences as a full-time working mother and wife, my love for nature, science, osteology and emotional discovery.
My paintings call attention to the animal or specimen depicted in the center of the image, as if found in a showcase in a natural history museum. Contrasting and bright colors with glitch imagery or graphic patterns surround the animal symbolizing outer influences such as stress, disturbances and struggles. The natural versus the artificial. The autonomous versus the vicious cycle.
Yet, I remain hopeful that we will remember to return to nurturing mother nature and live in harmony with the environment and others.
