Jealous are delighted to announce ‘Drawing Lines’, a group drawing show exploring the adaptability and scope of the medium from a selection of artists who take different approaches of constructing an image from line.
The group show offers a selection of works from 11 artists, each with a different approach to creating image, meaning or emotion through the application of line to surface. The exhibition aims to demonstrate the open nature and complexity of the often overlooked and undervalued medium, which is so often regarded as a form of draft rather than fully realised work. Drawing as a medium offers an undiluted and immediate form of expression. The marks made by the artist cannot be hidden or clothed behind further working, evoking a personal and intimate portrait of the artist.

Jealous have brought together works by a variety of artists; Jealous favourites as well as adding some new blood in the form of Nigel O’Neill, James Green, Delphine Lebourgeois, Yoshimoto Nara, and Lloyd Durling. There will also be new original works by Jess Wilson, David Shrigley, Ann-Marie James, Anka Dabrowska, Hayden Kays, Danny Augustine and Maria A Marquez.
Nigel O’Neill - The artist Nigel O’Neill lives and works in East London. He makes abstract paintings constructed from separate shaped panels of birch faced plywood. These panels are then painted with acrylic paint in flat vibrant colour. Exhibitions include The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Contemporary Arts Society, and A Different View Spectrum Fine Art London. He’s work is included in many collections including Paul Smith Ltd.
James Green - As a mixed-media artist with a welcomed lack of patience, Green paints with a hurriedness; resulting in intentional accidental marks, and an unintentional product. “I don’t actually want my portraits to look like the sitter. It’s about painting anyone in everyone, and everyone in anyone – creating the everyday person (plural) through every portrait.”
Ann-Marie James - Ann-Marie James was born in Buckinghamshire, UK and currently lives and works in London and Suffolk. James studied MA Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art, London. Ann-Marie James’ visual exploration remains open-ended: Pareidolia simultaneously presents us with a critique and celebration of the art establishment’s universal need for introspective self-affirmation.
Lloyd Durling - Lloyd Durling lives and works in London was born in Solihull, United Kingdom, 1979. His drawings are made from an innumerable amount of strokes that form a surface similar to thin washes of paint. Created using simple drawing tools — mainly felt-tip pen and graphite — the images are both animated and claustrophobic.
David Shrigley - David Shrigley was born in 1968 in Macclesfield, UK, he is now based in Brighton. Best known for his distinctive drawing style and works that make satirical comments on everyday situations and human interactions. His quick-witted drawings and hand-rendered texts are typically deadpan in their humour and reveal chance utterings like snippets of over-heard conversations
Anka Dabrowska - Anka Dabrowska makes drawings on paper that she customises with geographical details of her native Warsaw. Fine pencil drawings of tower blocks, shop fronts, kiosks and street signage are subtly constructed and spray-painted with humorous and unsettling consequences.
Delphine Lebourgeois - Delphine Lebourgeois studied Fine Art in Lyon then went on to complete a Masters in Illustration at Central St Martins in 2005. She works in various medium including digital, collage, pencil, pen, ink, watercolour and screenprint but her working process always starts with an initial collage of found elements.
Yoshitomo Nara - Nara was born in 1959 in Hirosaki, Japan and lives and works in Tokyo. Informed by a range of sources from anime to punk rock, Nara is well known for his cartoon-like drawings, paintings and sculptures of children and animals sporting adult expressions, provocative stances and salty vocabularies. Not only does his work resonate with a universal language of youthful alienation, it raises deeper, psychological questions about the notion of childhood.
Jess Wilson - Jess Wilson graduated in 2006 and has been living and working in London ever since. Using crayons, paints, inks and paper to create her unique illustrations and typographic works, she draws inspiration from humorous occurrences which happen around her in real life and in the media.
Hayden Kays - Hayden Kays is a painter, sculptor and printmaker whose work straddles an impossible boundary between street art and traditional visual culture. He has situated himself as an involved, sometimes complicit, commentator on capitalist culture, rather than as an aloof critic of an omnipotent system. His reflections on art and culture are sometimes sardonic, absurd and wry, but they are also revealing, vaguely uncomfortable and almost always true.
Maria A Marquez - Maria A Marquez graduated with an MA from Central Saint Martins in 2015 and was selected for the Jealous Prize. Using a range of techniques and materials in her work Maria creates dark and brooding ink and paint works, her stylised imagery of large groups, often students and religious iconography, jumps between the playful and unsettling.
Danny Augustine - Born in 1986 and raised in Hackney, Danny studied Fine Art at the University of East London and completed his printmaking MA at the Royal Collage of Art in 2014. Danny's work deals predominantly with ideas of identity and gender and how it is portrayed in today's society, be it male, female, transgender or homosexual. Playing with a narrative which starts out as hope, quickly becomes a hegemony of power and a carnival of vice. In regards to love and family Danny's work leaves the viewer both with a sense of what could have been and with a sense of how those feelings have been distorted by gender politics.
