Whilst artist in residence at Künstlerhaus Dortmund in 2016, Jorn Ebner recorded the sound environment of the German city. The resulting soundscapes were published as a limited edition music cassette, Dortmund Demo Tape. Drawings developed from the soundscapes were used as graphical scores that were performed by musicians at presentations in Germany as well as being re-worked into a colourful, highly gestural, limited edition print series.
The transformation of sound to image and back from image to sound is an integral element of Ebner’s work. Likewise, sound and the city have always played an important role. The public sound art project (The Beatles) in Hamburg(2011-12), dealt with a particular part of the history of pop music in relation to a city.Dortmund Demo Tapeexamines the sounds of the everyday activity on public squares, in shopping centres or in soup kitchens. The drawings capture certain tunes incidentally recorded, such as when children were recorded playing football. Traditional music notation is merged with graphical elements that focus on dynamics and movement.
Jorn Ebner was born in Bremerhaven, Germany, in 1966 and lives in Berlin, Germany. He attended Universität Hamburg, Germany (1990-95), Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Italy (1997) and Central St Martins College of Art, London (1995-98).
