Stuart Dunkel is a still-life painter based in Boston. Dunkel enjoys incorporating humor and playfulness in his work, as well as a sense of classical balance and naturalism. He considers all of his work autobiographical, as he uses painting to draw out his ideas on philosophy and beauty. His choice of darker backgrounds in his work is influenced by 17th century Dutch artists such Willem Kalf and Jan Davidsz de Heem. As he states, “This perception enforces my belief that nothing exists until light is draped over it. From the nothingness of black, we build up to the perceived objects.”
Apart from painting, Dunkel also teaches art at the Nautilus School of Realist Art, and music at the Boston Conservatory of Music.
