In celebration of Artists Equity’s 70th anniversary, Equity Gallery is pleased to announce 2017:1947, a group exhibition featuring works by Alva CalyMayor, Sharon Florin, Peter Gynd, Ambre Kelly, Gelah Penn, Christopher Stout and Bryce Zackery. The exhibition is curated by Melinda Wang, the founder of Equity Gallery and former executive director of Artists Equity. It will be on view from September 6 through October 7, 2017, with a public opening reception on Wednesday, September 6, 6-8pm.
2017:1947 will bring inspiration and ideas of the past and present together through painting, sculpture and photography. As with Equity Gallery’s inaugural exhibition in October 2015, contemporary artists were invited to show new work in their own style and media that conceptually responds to work of an Artists Equity founding member of his or her choice. Exhibiting artists drew inspiration from Yasuo Kuniyoshi (Artists Equity’s first president), Philip Guston, Lily Harmon, Guy Pene du Bois, Charles Sheeler, David Smith and Max Weber. In addition to their studio practices, each of the seven exhibiting artists is an active contributor to the New York art community, embodying the Artists Equity ethos of “artists helping artists.”
