Mannahatta was the original native American name for the island of Manhattan. The images are derived from architectural structures built during different periods in the history of the island and which can all be seen simultaneously in the co-existence of past and present. The quilting design of overlapping concentric circles is symbolic of the ephemeral nature of our existence on this landscape….we are here for a while and then gone, while the structures remain.

 

Artist ( Description ): 

Marilyn Henrion, who is represented in the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art, creates works of fine art that are included in museum, corporate and private collections worldwide. As a life-long New Yorker, her aesthetic vision has always been deeply rooted in the urban geometry of her surroundings, from the earlier textile-based geometric abstractions to the more recent mixed media works. Her gaze is wide and other subjects, such as music, poetry, and the natural world, also inform the content of her work…
