Best in Show
Deepwater, by Rachel Kalman
26 x 30 inches, Oil on Canvas
From the artist, "Still life painting that integrates an image of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill."
We are in love with the colors, patterns, technical ability, and message in this piece.
Artivism Award and Overall Runner Up
Albatross, by Nancy Hart
30 x 22 inches, Color-tinted graphite on watercolor paper
From the artist, "A drawing inspired by a documentary about the abatrosses on Midway Island. The adults collect food from the ocean that also contain plastics. This gets fed to their chicks resulting in death. They also drown from the use of long-line fishing techniques. They are threatened with extinction due to these causes."
The message is as powerful in the drawing as it is in the empty spaces.
Overall Honorable Mentions go to Rachel Kalman, Nancy Hart, Sienna Van Slooten, Kathy Bussert-Webb, Amy Vulfovich, and Kathleen Bartl.
Special Merit awards go to Kathy Bussert-Webb, Najib Joe Hakim, Alissa Maddren, Heidi Weaver, Susan Solomon, and Cynthia Fisher.
