Opening:
Friday, 10 July 2020 - 12:00pm

The German-American painter Albert Bierstadt's monumental landscapes defined the vision of the West in the American popular imagination. Recently, scholars have noted how Bierstadt's vision of the West was informed by his training in Düsseldorf, a small but influential city on the Rhine, far from the Rocky Mountains. Join American Art Research Fellow Grant Hamming as he shares the latest research on Bierstadt, whose Shoshone Indians - Rocky Mountains is currently on view in the exhibition The Place as Metaphor.
