Cyrus Tang – Unknown

Cyrus Tang’s Unknown is a memorial to those who disappear quietly from the world.

The artworks that will be presented in Tang’s upcoming solo exhibition Unknown were developed during the Australia-Korea Reciprocal Residency 2012, supported by Asialink.

During her time in Korea, Tang visited over fifty salons in Seoul in order to collect human hair. Dying the hair white and weaving it into a blanket-like form, Tang used the mass of hair as a base onto which she projected images of unidentified human bodies. In these works, Tang has created haunting photographic and video portraits of unidentified and nameless individuals.

Through this body of work Tang is questioning our emotions about a person’s death going unnoticed and examines the fragility of the human existence.

Tang believes that among the various stories in the world, the ones about disappearing are the most captivating to us. ‘Whether slowly or suddenly, everything around us will eventually disappear irrevocably. We too will disappear.’(Tang)
