Conny Dietzschold Gallery is honoured to present a solo exhibition of Sydney-based artist Pollyxenia Joannou. DEVOLVING is an exploration into the perpetual motion of creation. A constant cycle of Devolving, Evolving and Nothingness. Rather than being a devoid and empty space, ‘nothingness’ is described by Pollyxenia as being ‘alive with possibility’. A fertile space in constant motion from one direction and then quickly changing to the next.
Surface plays an important role in this exhibition, incorporating tactile materials such as felt, blanket, rope, graphite, wood, silkscreen silk, cotton rag paper to more traditional mediums such as oil and acrylic on canvas. Pollyxenia describes her artistic process as a ‘stripping away’ to reveal a ‘quiet beauty or aesthetic’, through her accidental observations of the little things. DEVOLVING masterfully weaves understated bursts of colour such as lime and pink alongside subdued shades of grey. The reductive use of painting and drawing of geometric shapes and sharp angles allows space for contemplation in the viewer.
Pollyxenia Joannou lives and works in Sydney, teaching drawing at the National Art School, to share her expertise. Her work spans over 30 years, with prestigious group exhibitions, including the Sulman Prize, the Archibald Prize, and the Portia Geach Memorial Award. With numerous solo exhibitions, residencies, scholarships and grants in Sydney and abroad, Pollyxenia Joannou has certainly established for herself a space on the contemporary art scene.
