Date:
Thursday, 21 June 2018 to Sunday, 16 September 2018

Ben Uri curators Rachel Dickson and Sarah MacDougall have curated this major survey of the artist David Bomberg (1890-1957) in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the artist’s death. A variation of the exhibition first launched at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester last October 2017 and then toured to the Laing Gallery in Newcastle in February 2018.

The exhibition of some 40 major works, including some hitherto unknown and never exhibited important examples, will be on show from the 21st June - 16th September 2018.

Admission donation for this exhibition is £5 and £4 for concessions. These sums are fully credited against the purchase of the new monograph described below.

Published to coincide with the exhibition, the curators have also written and edited a major, lavishly illustrated new 220 page monograph titled BOMBERG which is now for sale in good gallery and high street bookshops and on the Ben Uri on-line shop. The price is £30 for soft cover and £45 for hard back.

Artist ( Description ):

David Bomberg (1890-1957) was born in Birmingham to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents. He spent his formative years in London’s East End among his fellow “Whitechapel Boys” which remains a principal focus of Ben Uri.

The influence of his early evening-class tutor Walter Sickert is reflected in Bomberg’s Bedroom Picture (1911-12, private collection) which was later re-worked as the Vorticist- influenced At the Window (1919, Ben Uri Collection). Both works are included in the exhibition and are an example of a pairing or re-working that is one of its major themes.

David Bomberg and Ben Uri histories have been intertwined since the museum was the first public institution to recognise the importance of his radical oeuvre and purchased his works initially in 1920 and regularly thereafter.
