Danny Rolph - East Central

Wednesday, 28 September 2016 to Sunday, 6 November 2016

Danny Rolph East Central 28th September – 6th November 2016 Private View: Tuesday 27th September 2016, 18:30–20:30pm

‘I grew up in the sky, one hundred foot above City Road. The view from our kitchen window contained sunset and sunrises of the type that Tiepolo imagines populated by architectural silhouettes of St Paul’s, the Old Bailey and the Post Office Tower.’ Danny Rolph

Rebecca Lidert, the director of CNB Gallery, and the London-based curator Sharon Newton are delighted to present a body of new work by the acclaimed British artist Danny Rolph, his first solo exhibition in London in four years.

Entitled East Central, the show is an installation made up of four of Rolph’s signature ‘triplewall’ paintings, each one drawing on the artist’s memories of growing up in East Central London, and offering an extraordinary palimpsest of historical and modern architecture, skyscapes and light.

The seemingly chaotic and colourful paintings are created by layering sculptural polycarbonate with expressionistic brushwork and collaged imagery, explosions of geometric shapes with kaleidoscopic movement. Abstract and anarchic yet controlled, his works are characterised by a sense of energy.

Says curator Sharon Newton: ‘These beautiful paintings capture the dynamism of the city, and are reflective of the areas in which Danny grew up. While they are arranged EC2, 2016, mixed media on triplewall, 100 x 240 cm as an installation, each work is self-contained, revealing a highly personalised response to each of the districts of East Central London.’
