Long & Ryle are delighted to announce an exhibition of new work by Ramiro Fernandez Saus, the celebrated Catalan artist. This will be his first exhibition in London since 2019.

Saus paints mostly from his own world and imagination but his uncanny scenes contain echoes of folk tales, myths and legends and children’s stories. His almost magical subjects include a mix of historical elements and traditions with personal and collective memories.

One of the paintings taking centre stage is My Room by the Sea (pictured here), an interpretation of the artist’s room, where two birds watch over a sleeping dog on the sofa and in which nautical paintings and objects are set against a view of an empty sea through an open window. Is it a comfortable clutter of past memories or the quiet emptiness of the present? That is for the viewer to decide and it is a characteristic of Saus’s playful imagination at work.

Saus enjoys working in different media to different effect. In oil, his paintings are mostly rich in colour and thick with impasto. The watercolours are equally exuberant, but smaller, lighter in touch and more focused single subjects. A new limited-edition sculpture on the theme of ‘The Gold of the Tiger’, and a limited-edition print produced with the Barcelona studio of Juan Roma will be included in the exhibition.

The subject for Saus’s painted bronze sculptures almost always come from a painting and as such, he observes it would be “unthinkable to make them with no colour”. For this exhibition Saus has made a new sculpture of a tiger on a cloud in an edition of twenty-five.
