ORIGINAL ARTISTS' POSTERS

A selection of original artists’ posters produced by leading artists of the 20th Century; a testament to an extraordinary art form pioneered by Jules Cheret and championed by master printer Fernand Mourlot.

Original Artists’ Posters is the latest exhibition to be found at Sylvester Fine Art.  Starting from Wednesday 9 September the exhibition shows a wide variety of examples of this extraordinary art form which has long been practiced by many of the world’s leading artists.

Posters have been an integral part of mass communication for many centuries but when Jules Cheret introduced his three-stone lithographic process to the art form towards the end of the 19th century, there followed a renewed interest for artists who realized the possibilities.  For the first time posters could be colourful; visually imaginative as well as informative.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is perhaps one of the most important contributors in raising the poster beyond its commercial constraints to that of high art.  Lautrec established himself as the premier poster artist of Paris and was regularly commissioned to advertise famous performers in his prints. 

After the First World War, the art form was given a further boost by master printer, Fernand Mourlot, whose renowned atelier in Paris attracted some of the artistic giants of the 20th century.  Under his direction both the lithographic technique as well as the poster became enriched by the work of artists like Picasso, Chagall and Miro, amongst many others.

The exhibition features work by these and many other artists of the 20th century and with prices starting from as little as £350 and rising to £2,500 for some of the rarer pieces, there will be something to appeal to all tastes and pockets.

The show will run for four weeks from 9 September 2015 at Sylvester Fine Art, 64 Belsize Lane, London NW3 5BJ.
