Tuesday, 15 September 2015 to Friday, 9 October 2015

Sims Reed Gallery presents an exhibition of around 40 prints and works on paper by celebrated American artist Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920).

None of these pieces have ever been shown in the UK before, and most have never been seen in public or been on the market before. Prices will range from £4,500 - £200,000.

Throughout his career, Thiebaud often revisited the same imagery - still lifes and food displays - depicting these over and over with drawing, painting, printmaking, and pastels. This show juxtaposes his prints with unique works on paper that deal with the same subjects but often to very different effect, thus highlighting his skill as a draughtsman and printmaker. The majority of the work comes directly from the artist's long time gallerist and friend - the late Allan Stone. Though a seminal and beloved artist in America, Thiebaud has not been shown widely in Europe or the UK. Sims Reed Gallery is delighted to be able to bring this show of important Thiebaud works to London.

Artist ( Description ):

Wayne Thiebaud (American, b.1920), a painter best known for his still lifes and food displays, was born in Arizona, and made his career on the West Coast. Though Thiebaud is famous for his calm depictions of everyday objects, he also painted Californian land and cityscapes.

Thiebaud studied Commercial Art in school, and, after graduating college, was accepted as a professional cartoonist at Walt Disney Studios. His years as a cartoonist influenced his mature technique, a stylized realism depicting everyday objects and scenes. Although Thiebaud is often associated with the Pop Art movement, his work does not critique the iconic imagery of American society and consumer culture, but embraces it instead. Thiebaud also taught at the Sacramento Junior College and the University of California at Davis for many years. He currently lives and works in California.

Venue ( Address ):
