intimate observations is centred around a body of still-life paintings exploring the domestic items from Rainbird’s studio. Since painting people from life has become difficult during the last few years, this body of work represents a retreat into the creative space to find inspiration within it. His artwork as a poetic interpretation of direct observation, often intimate in size and colourful in nature. Painting quickly and spontaneously, Rainbird often revises and revisits a subject over many months until satisfied with the outcome. His work has a tendency towards bright colouration and texture - lacking fidelity to nature, instead of creating an expression of the subject.
Artist:
Toby Rainbird is a London-based Figurative Artist from the Channel Islands. He explores quiet and intimate moments in his art through a combination of direct observation and colourful reimagining of his subjects. His work seeks to convey a poetic sense of reflection; focusing his attention on contemplative, ambiguous and closed moments with individuals or in nature.
Toby studied his Fine Art (BA) at Bath School of Art & Design (2016) where he developed his love of direct observation and use of oil paint and drawing media. His Self Portrait was bought in 2019 by the Ruth Borchard National Collection. He has been awarded the Henry Thomas Bosdet Award for Life Drawing, Robert Mcavoy Memorial Award for Art & Design and Outstanding Achievement in Fine Art (Bath School of Art & Design).
