My paintings provide people with mental space, color, and brightness.  Although they are landscape-like, they remain abstract and are more about a set of conditions than a picture of a particular place.  I build compositions around concepts like density, saturation, layering, strain, and their opposites.

Artist ( Description ):

Margaret Lazzari, Biography

Margaret Lazzari is an artist, writer and Professor of Painting/Drawing at the Roski School of Fine Arts of the University of Southern California.  She is currently the Associate Dean of Faculty, and until recently was also the Director of Undergraduate studies.

She has widely exhibited her paintings and drawings in many gallery and museum shows.  In addition to gallery work, recent public art commissions include artwork for the Los Angeles Metro Orange Line Sherman Way Station. Also, Planting a Garden is a temporary work for the City of Pasadena executed with fellow artist Lauren Evans.  Both commissions reflect the local history of the place as well as the evolution of its botanical history.  Lazzari and Evans were also recently awarded a commission from the City of Santa Monica for the Longfellow Street Sustainability Project, to be completed in 2013,

Lazzari is the co-author of Exploring Art:  A Global, Thematic Approach, an award-winning art appreciation text.  She is also the author of The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist.  Both are published by Cengage and are highly successful, with Exploring Art in the 4th edition, and The Practical Handbook in its enhanced second edition.  Currently, she is working with two authors to develop a drawing text/sketchbook, to be finished in 2013.

Margaret Lazzari was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and received her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis.
