1AM Gallery is pleased to present the Precita Eyes Benefit: Keep Our Eyes Open, opening January 14th 2016, featuring an array of artwork by muralists that have been working with the prolific non-profit Precita Eyes team.

As you may have recently heard, Precita Eyes has been at risk for losing their historic space at Precita Park in the Mission District; with their building up for sale, we are gathering the local art community together to help them buy the building of their original Precita location, in support of their Urban Youth Arts Program. They’ve teamed up with Mission Economic Development Association, and need to raise 200K in loans and donations before escrow closes on January 22nd, 2016.

For almost 40 years Precita Eyes has been a staple in the San Francisco arts community—their work can be found at almost every corner of the Mission, SoMA, Bayview, and Bernal Heights neighborhoods. As an inner-city and urban mural arts association founded by Susan Cervantes, they have continued to beautify, enrich, and educate our city in a publicly accessible way. They’ve served thousands of inner city, at-risk youth, with mentorship and instruction by master teachers; many of these youth have flourished into iconic figures of the Bay Area street art world.

Gentrification in the recent years has challenged and changed the San Francisco art scene, we are at a pivotal time to empower local public art legacies. Precita Eyes has long been a symbol of the the unification between cultural heritage and arts education. As a community based mural organization, they serve to encourage positive and socially unifying creative expression, with collaborative public mural projects, and youth and community art classes. Most importantly, they provide a safe and positive space for urban youth to create.

We must come together to protect the organizations and artists that have helped make our city the thriving cultural center it has always been. We are proud to team up with our friends at Precita Eyes to buy their 348 Precita Avenue location, and voice the importance of preserving public arts communities in San Francisco!

1AM, short for First Amendment, represents the freedom of speech through our contemporary urban art exhibitions, walls, and classes. Since our launch October 10, 2008, we continually strive to progress the graffiti and street art culture while creating a community of artists, fans, and supporting like minded organizations. Headquartered in San Francisco, we are passionate about exhibiting, teaching, painting, and archiving the street art movement while inspiring the masses with this artistic form of the freedom of speech.
