Views of the past with Tonia's necklaces, an international online solo jewelry art exhibition by Tonia Marek opens on February 16, and will continue for two months until April 16, 2024.

Tonia Marek's work can be considered as art to wear. She designs mixed media assemblages to give a new life to ancient beads and elements from Africa’s markets. Some of those ancient beads are still used today in rituals by traditional healers there. Through her art, Tonia works with elements that have a meaning among certain people, or that have traveled many continents and through time to tell the stories hidden behind these elements. When wearing a necklace created by Tonia Marek, you put on a part of Africa’s history, of the world's cultural heritage.

Artist ( Description ):

Working and living as an epidemiologist in several African countries I assembled a huge bead collection which inspires me. I also documented the uses of beads by traditional healers in their rituals and by priests in some animistic rites.

I am a self-taught designer, and I am constantly learning from jewelry craftspeople and artists.

I have held shows of my necklaces in art galleries of 3 continents: Paris, Salon de Provence, Montpellier in France; New Orleans, St. Louis (Missouri) in the US; Dakar, Algiers in Africa.
