The Mission district in San Francisco, CA has become synonymous with the up and coming.  It is only here that unknown restaurants book up for weeks before their openings, galleries show the best in emerging art, and people seem to have their finger on the pulse of San Francisco living. However, 100 years ago this area functioned for an entirely different purpose.  766 - 770 Valencia, now home to eccentric stores, cafes and galleries, was once the home of a Mortuary. The building was constructed as a funeral parlor in 1914 and served as a mortuary for the next 65 years.  While the building’s use has changed over the past three decades, the space remains architecturally unchanged.

Now 766 Valencia is home to a new contemporary art space: Incline Gallery. This September Incline will host the exhibition titled Manifest 770, curated by Scott S. Jennings and mosshouse, SF. In this exhibition thirteen artists will use the history associated with the building and the architectural uniqueness of the series of ramps that ascend towards what was once the embalming room, as inspiration for creating photography, paintings, mixed media, video and sculpture. The reaction of each artist to the colorful history of the space will manifests itself through each of their respective styles and mediums. The outcome will thread together these artists unique vision into one cohesive exhibition. The curatorial theme is a conceptual approach of using cross-disciplinary artwork to create a diversity in which various mediums can address a unified idea through a dynamic installation design. The approach is also intended to make historical reference with current events, either personally or politically. Lastly, M770 discusses the attributes of each medium, and how each medium contributes thematically within the context of the exhibition.

mosshouse, founded in August of 2010, focuses on the development of independent curatorial programming. mosshouse collaborates with artists, curators, critics, historians, journalists, art non-profits, galleries and non-traditional art spaces, with the goal of creating art exhibitions for diverse audiences through collaboration with the greater creative community. Incline Gallery, which opened in December of 2010, seeks to offer a nurturing platform and a solid support system for emerging Bay Area visual and performative artists. By reaching out to these artists, curators, and the public at large, Incline Gallery opens the doors to an inspirational and experimental place of growth and community building.
