Daniel Raphael Gallery is proud to present Light In Its Changing Qualities, a powerful exploration of the use of light in the impressionistic works of Gerry Defries and Paula Nightingale. By employing light as a medium both artists convey a sense of serene calm and a look at the pervasive beauty of nature.

Defries was recently selected to exhibit in the Royal Society of Maritime Artist’s Annual Exhibition. A keen sailor, Defries is inspired by the majesty of the sea, with several of his works artfully capturing the way sunlight catches on waves. In his piece, Fishing in the Lakes, Defries renders the way that light momentarily reflects off foaming waves of a waterfall, a lone figure highlighted against this majestic backdrop, rod in hand, poised for his catch.

Alongside Defries’ works, Nightingale presents a selection of soft-focus studies in colour and form, reminiscent of the work of Pierre Bonnard and Les Nabis. Her work portrays the fleeting splendour of a certain light. The impressionistic scenes she paints examine the relationship between colour and changing light on form, depicting stark figures caught in a moment of deeply insular reflection. Beyond the Garden presents viewers with an Autumnal scene at twilight, the eyes of a fox gleaming outwards beyond the frame, wonderfully expressed in oil paint.

Curator and Gallery Owner Daniel Levy says:“The way that these two artists explore the changing qualities of light is the perfect fit for our October show, when the leaves are changing hue and the slow decline of daylight makes us contemplate the effect that changes in light can have, altering our perceptions of forms around us. Defries and Nightingale’s work complements each other nicely, bringing a beautiful touch of soft colour to the white walls of the gallery space.”
