Join Malcolm Gaskill – Emeritus Professor of Early Modern History at the University of East Anglia and one of Britain’s leading experts and authors on the history of witchcraft – for live audience talks at Firstsite.

Although spiritualism first took off in the Victorian era, its heyday came after the First World War when so many grieving families attended seances hoping to contact those they had loved and lost.

Helen Duncan, known as ‘Hellish Nell’, was the most famous of them all, not least because she was tried and imprisoned in 1944 under the Witchcraft Act.

This talk tells her story in the context of the anxious times in which she lived.
