Nina Yocom is an award-winning artist from the suburban Philadelphia area. She primarily works with alcohol ink, with accents of acrylic and fine liner pen. She allows the flow of the inks to organically form the structure of her paintings, suggesting botanical and landscape subjects.
Nina was recently featured in a four person exhibition at Cerulean Arts in Philadelphia, and has been included in juried exhibitions throughout the regional area. This year she was awarded the Merle Spandorfer Memorial Award at Cheltenham Center for the Arts and an Honorable Mention at Berks Art Alliance's Exhibition at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA. She is active in art associations such as The Philadelphia Sketch Club and The Plastic Club in Philadelphia, and more locally with Philadelphia/Tri-State Artist Equity where she holds a Board position.
This show will feature 20 of her alcohol ink paintings including many new pieces on paper, canvas and panel from smaller works at 6" x 6" to larger at 20" x 20".

I am a self-taught artist, born and raised in suburban Philadelphia. My earliest exposure to fine art was when my mother volunteered in our public elementary schools with a program called “Art Goes to School.” This innovative program exposed me to a variety of artists and their work, along with an understanding of the color wheel and how colors work together. My father, an award-winning photographer and chemist, also influenced my own lens. This background, along with a liberal arts education, cultivated an appreciation for how art is a conduit of connection. As an emerging artist in my early 50s, I feel that I am making a radical re-discovery of self, enhanced by the act of creating.
In my work I allow the flow of alcohol ink to organically form the structure of my piece. Using a palette of different colors enables me to set the intention of where the piece will evolve. On occasion, I layer acrylic over the alcohol ink once it has dried. This method gives my piece added dimension, and is also an incredibly soothing process. I also enjoy using fine liner pens to detail over the alcohol ink images. Usually the artwork can stand alone if I am satisfied with the layout. Either way, I enjoy this medium for its ability to express gratitude, hope, healing and self-acceptance.
